Neurotoxins, such as the Botox and Dysport injections we offer here at DeRoberts Plastic Surgery in Syracuse, are cosmetic injections that help to smooth out wrinkles. We understand that “neurotoxin” can sound a bit scary, but rest assured, cosmetic neurotoxin products like Botox and Dysport are FDA approved and widely used by plastic surgeons around the world!
Wrinkles are often caused by the constant repetition of certain facial expressions, such as squinting. The way neurotoxins help wrinkly skin is by inhibiting the nerves that control muscle contraction. In between the eyebrows, outer corners of the eyes, and the forehead are the most common areas that neurotoxins are used to treat. Since botox treatments work by preventing muscle contraction, it’s also an effective way to prevent future wrinkles.
Botox products typically start working three day post-injection and can take one to two weeks for to take full effect. Botox products will then usually last between three and five months. Some side effects patients may experience from botox are slight headaches and drooping. It’s important to have a skilled injector (like Jena!) to prevent the severity of these side effects. Botox and Dysport typically last three to five months.
Prior to getting botox patients are required to stop taking blood thinners one week prior, stop drinking alcohol two days prior, and refrain from exercise the day of.
